  about us

Wisconsin Women in Government was founded in 1987 to celebrate and support the talented women who choose a career in government service. Each year, WWIG awards scholarships to women pursuing undergraduate and post-graduate study at any Wisconsin institution of higher education. Scholarships are also provided for young women to attend Badger Girls State and to the student elected Governor.

In addition, WWIG works in cooperation with the La Follette School of Public Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to offer the "Women in Government Graduate Seminar." The program is designed to emphasize skills for high-level managers, management techniques, effective networks, and strategies to achieve professional success. Proceeds from our annual recognition dinner benefit these scholarship efforts.

Undergraduate Scholarships

The Wisconsin Women in Government Scholars program is designed to inspire women to consider careers in public service, public administration, and government affairs. The purpose of the program is to make post-secondary education more accessible to women by relieving some of the financial burden. It is intended to retain those who have begun such studies but would have difficulty continuing without financial assistance.

Badger Girls State

The American Legion Auxiliary annually sponsor Badger Girls State, a week of activities open to high school girls. The activities focus on the state legislative process and provide girls the opportunity to take part in a mock legislature. Wisconsin Women in Government is pleased to provide funding that will enable future women in government to attend this week-long event.

Graduate Seminar

Started in 1999, this program assists women managers in advancing their careers. Wisconsin Women in Government partnered with the La Follette School of Public Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to create a public policy Graduate Seminar.

Legislature Service Agency Internships

Named in honor of Bonnie Reese, the first woman to head a legislative service agency in Wisconsin, this internship program gives young women first-hand experience with governmental process by working in government offices.
